The UK government has released its long-awaited White Paper review of the Gambling Act. At a high level, the outcome looks to be reasonable, with the proposals moving largely in step with the safer gambling initiatives that the responsible listed operators have already implemented or are currently doing so. The review has clearly attempted to balance the rights of consumers who wish to gamble in a responsible manner while attempting to protect those who are vulnerable to harm. There are a number of key points that still need to be consulted on before any legislation is implemented, so the sector does not have full visibility on the outcomes. However, for now, this feels like a sensible approach overall. A level playing pitch, enforcement and clarity will be welcomed by the listed responsible operators.
